This is a beautifully carved abstract of a Masai head. Masai women are famous for wearing lots of intricate beaded jewelry around their neck and on their ears, as a sign of beauty and status.
This abstract carving shows that beautifully. It has been carved out of a very rare and expensive wood Ebony. It emphases the jewelry, by the fact that two thirds of the carving is of the jewellery. The face has a very calm, composed, and regal expression.
Because ebony is such a hard wood, it has taken the artist weeks to carve and polish this. The shine is natural.
The carving measures just over 18 inches in height and 4 inches in width.
