If you have never seen an ebony wood trunk you may be mistaken into believing that ebony is a dark brown, almost black wood. Ebony, however is both black and white! The outer circumference is white and its color changes to almost black towards its core. The contrasting colors have the same hardness, texture and grain.
This is a unique carving of African village folk going about their daily work. This figures have been carved into the exposed wood core which is black. The white ebony has been left in its natural state.
This carving is best place in a position where you can see it from all angles, there is an intricate carving on both sides of the trunk, and the parts which have not been carved show the beautiful bark of the wood which is just as much a part of the whole artistic appeal of this piece as the carvings.
